The Fundamentals of Playing Golf
How
To Improve Your Golf Swing
When Tiger Woods bagged his first Masters
Tournament, he was still not satisfied with his golf swings.
After the Masters, he did an evaluation of his performance
by watching the game on video. There he saw his swing flaws
and knew that some things had to be corrected. To reach the
next level and continue winning in major championships, he
was determined to improve and completely reconstruct his swing.
He hired a coach and they worked together to perfect his golf
swing.
Up to the present, Tiger Woods continues to improve his swing.
He was never contented and that is why be became the legend
that he is – the No. 1 golfer of all all-time.
To know the tricks of the game, here are some steps to guide
you to achieve those successful swings.
A good balance, smooth tempo and rhythm make a natural golf
swing. Keep feet close together (about six inches apart) for
a solid swing foundation.
The weight on the right foot should be kept in place and do
a slight bend of the knee to establish good contact and real
power. As the club is taken back, the right knee should be
solid like a wall. This will prompt the upper body to loop
behind the ball for an aggressive swing.
Use the loft of the golf club to your advantage. When hitting
the ball, strike down and through it. This will help achieve
good contact and ensure a natural flight path.
For maximum distance and consistency, proper weight shift
is the key. Let the left shoulder turn at the back of the ball
without swaying the hips. Move the right shoulder past the
ball as a follow through. This will not only establish a good
turn but will result to good weight shift as well.
Avoid the quick swing. Rhythm should always be given emphasis
over power and acceleration. To do this, there should be a
slight pause when you perform a backswing before turning and
doing the downswing.
While executing a backswing, make sure the club is at waist
height, look behind and let the thumb point upward toward the
sky. The hand should be in a handshake position, with the palm
facing neither up nor down.
Oftentimes, golfers allow their left knee to bend toward the
right while they do a backswing, making their shoulder drop
and their hips sway and overturn. To correct this, ensure that
the left knee sway towards the target. As a result of this,
both knees should feel tension and stability.
A good way to learn consistent and powerful swings is to extend
the swing after hitting the ball. To practice, put a tee in
front of the ball (about eight inches) and try hitting the
ball as well as the tee. This will help a lot in swinging through
the ball.
On a breezy tournament, do not be overcome with fear. Instead,
always remember the adage “swing with ease into the breeze.”
Golfers often feel the need to swing harder which can only
cause the ball to spin and soar sky high. To achieve a controlled
swing, hit low and get the ball back a few inches from your
stance with your hands forward. A longer cub is required for
an easy swing.
Avoid a tense and violent downswing but rather work for a
light and smooth one to achieve skillful contact.
Avoid hauling the club back abruptly with the wrists. This
would get the swing off plane and would make inaccurate extension.
In a tournament, make it a habit to warm up first in the practice
area before heading to the initial tee. The practice area is
venue to loosen your muscle and rehearse your moves. This will
establish rhythm and tempo and will prevent possible injury.
The club head should be square for the duration of the swing.
Never twist the hands when you initiate the square clubface
to the ball.
To achieve a perfect swing, let the arms go first and easily
move the club away with the arms and let the body go along.
This way, the left shoulder and hips will follow comfortably,
naturally shifting the weight to your right side.
These are just few simple tips for anyone who wants to enjoy
the game and excel in it in the long run. Remember that Tiger
Woods started as an amateur before he became a golf master.
Even ordinary folks can have that much admired perfect swing
of the young champion. You would just have to learn and relearn
continuously until the swing becomes a part of you.
