Individual Defensive Soccer Moves
Just as with most other team sports, one’s
success on the soccer field relies largely on teamwork. However,
perhaps more than any other sport, soccer relies on each member
of the pitch to act as a cohesive, harmonic unit because everyone
plays either offense or defense in due accordance. On the defense
of a football team, the best way to become the most efficient
collective unit possible is by having everyone practice their
individual moves - this collectively individual excellence
will make a defensive machine. Also, practice defense as a
team in order to promote fluidity. Thus, to become the most
effective defensive team one needs to dually practice both
aspects of the sport.
Individual Defensive Moves:
In order to employ the best team defensive strategies, all
the individuals of a team must hone their individual skills.
The first thing for one to work on is passing. Utilizing good
defensive passing will allow a defensive unit to control the
tempo of the game; furthermore, sharp defensive passing will
keep the ball from the opposition when needed while setting
up counter attacks. Also, sharp, crisp defensive passing will
allow a defensive unit to slow, or bog down an offensive team
that normally attacks rapidly. The best way to hone this skill
is just as with anything else in so far as the more one does
something, the better they become at it; therefore, in order
to become the best defensive passer possible, one should always
practice passing with another member on the team everyday for
as long as possible.
The second type of important individual move is tackling.
Learning how to do this in the most effective manner can do
three things: one it can help steal the ball from an opposing
offensive attacker, thereby starting a counter attack; second,
learning the proper technique and timing can save a player
from getting carded, or penalized; third, knowing the proper
technique can prevent injuries to both players involved in
the tackle. Just as with passing, practice will make perfect.
Aside from repetition one needs to learn to always tackle under
control and anticipate the opponents speed and timing.
The third individual move one should practice is marking.
Marking is essentially learning how to take proper cut-off
angles in order to impede the progression of an offensive attacker.
The best way to practice marking is repetitive practice. Just
like the tackling and passing, the more one practices marking,
the more he or she will learn how to anticipate and calculate
the most effectively to cut down varying types of speeds. Perhaps
the best thing an individual can do is aerobic conditioning.
Aerobic conditioning will effectively cause a player get in
better shape thereby allowing them to run faster and for longer
intervals. If a player can run longer and faster than the opponent
then their marking will ultimately become much more efficient.
Another individual move that everyone on the team should practice
is channeling. Channeling is when an individual learns to force
the attacker(s) to the side-line on defense. When this is accomplished
it will effectively thwart the offensive player and his or
her unit from setting up their attack strategy and by splitting
seams your defensive shell, which will result in breakdowns.
The best way to practice this is by making everyone one the
team constantly channels each other to the sideline in practice.
If this is done habitually eventually it will ensue without
subconsciously during a match. Also, just as is the case with
marking, working on aerobic conditioning will ultimately allow
a player to become faster and have quicker feet..
Defensive Strategy:
First of all, when a football unit plays defense, the anchor
of this system is the defender. The defenders on a team can
either play man-to-man or zone to provide this anchor. Thus,
in order to best master defensive strategies, that team must
constantly practice together; furthermore, when doing so, everyone
must be there because when everyone practices together, it
will promote collective cohesiveness as a unit.
Aside from this, in order to get better as a defensive unit
a team should practice different styles of man-to-man defense,
such as a sweeper defense. More importantly than this, a team
should practice many different styles of zone defenses. By
practicing as many types of defenses as possible while in practice
will enable a team to become more versatile while implementing
them in a match setting. Thus, if a team is able to utilize
many different defenses in a match, it will allow them to absorb
what other teams are doing; furthermore, knowing many different
defenses will allow your defense to confuse an attack, which
ultimately will allows to control the tempo.
